About Orlistat

When combined with regular exercise and a healthy diet, Orlistat weight loss pill can increase your chances of losing weight and aid treating obesity.

If you have previously tried losing body weight through diet and exercise, and have not had the desired results, you may wish to consider trying to use Orlistat. Orlistat prevents your body from absorbing the fat from the food you eat, and by reducing the amount of fat that is absorbed, Orlistat has proved in clinical trials to help you lose up to 50% more weight than with dieting alone.

120mg of Orlistat is used in the treatment of obesity. Orlistat is only suitable for people with a body mass index BMI of 30 or for people with a BMI over 28 who have conditions related to weight such as diabetes or high blood pressure.

Take 1 capsule with water 3 times a day immediately before, during, or up to an hour after each main meal (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). Orlistat only works in the presence of dietary fat. If you miss a main meal or if you have a meal containing no fat, do not take Orlistat.

How does Orlistat work?

If you eat an excessive amount of calories, the excess is stored as fat by the body, resulting

in weight gain. When you eat fat diets, your body breaks it down into its simplest components so that it can be digested.

Orlistat works in a unique way. Orlistat works in your digestive system to block about one-third of the fat in the food you eat from being digested. Enzymes in your digestive system, called lipases, help digest (or break down) fat. When taken with meals, Orlistat attaches to the lipases and blocks them from breaking down some of the fat you have eaten.

The active ingredient attaches itself to some of the body’s natural enzymes that break down fat, so undigested fat is not absorbed into your body and is passed out with your stools (faeces).

Orlistat is not an appetite suppressant or a stimulant. It's formulated to work only in your digestive system and should not affect your brain, heart rate or cause sleeplessness. The safety and efficacy of Orlistat has been established in more than 100 clinical studies with data from over 30,000 people.

How effective is Orlistat?

Orlistat should be taken 3 times a day, over 12 weeks, during which time you should aim to lose about 5% of your weight. However, the speed and quality of its effects depend on aspects of your lifestyle (see guidance below).

While Orlistat does help reduce the amount of fat your body absorbs, it is only effective if you make complementary lifestyle changes (see below for full details). These include increased exercise, moderating calorie intake, eating a balanced diet, reducing alcohol consumption and other behavioural changes including your personal commitment and motivation to losing weight.

Lifestyle changes

Lifestyle modification is crucial to the success of any weight-loss management plan; exercise is essential, moderating calorie intake in conjunction with eating a balanced diet including reducing alcohol consumption is a must, and other behavioural changes including your personal commitment and motivation to losing weight are necessary for success.

Calorie intake and balanced diet: Reduction of calorie intake should be considered the cornerstone of any weight-loss and weight-maintenance plan. You should be looking at a 1,200 to 1,500 kcal/day diet for women or a 1,500 to 1,800 kcal/day diet for men; a diet that is 500 to 750 kcal less than your usual diet, and look at a diet that restricts certain food types.

Increased consumption of nutrient-poor added fats, sugar, salt and refined grains contributes to obesity. A healthy diet should include a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and high-quality protein. Drinking more water, less alcohol and controlling portion sizes are two other behaviours that can promote weight loss.

Exercise: Another major factor in health-based weight loss is daily physical activity. In addition to promoting weight loss, exercise can lower the risk factors of many disease states and aid in stress management. Resistance training should also be incorporated to help promote fat loss while preserving lean mass. The key to exercise and weight loss is to be physically active daily and consistently, but please consider any health-related or physical limitations

If you have a low level of physical activity to start with, kick off with light activity and slowly integrate moderate-intensity aerobic activities such as walking, running, cycling or swimming, 4 times a week for 30 minutes. Then increase the duration of number of minutes per session and frequency of sessions of moderate-intensity activity before increasing the intensity. A higher level of physical activity — 2-3 times a week for 1 hour — is recommended to maintain weight loss and minimise weight regain for the long term.

Behavioural changes: For reduced-calorie diets and exercise to be successful for weight loss, you must personally commitment to your plan, which will result in a change of lifestyle. To achieve this, behavioural changes and motivation to losing weight are necessary for success.

Self-monitoring of weight, food intake, and exercise will all help, as will personal goal setting, education via group meetings or virtual meetings, stress reduction, motivational interviewing, counselling and problem-solving strategies. You need to increase your capacity for self-control by changing habits and maintaining the new habits.

Orlistat Targets

When you start taking Orlistat you will be given a weight loss target for the first 3 months. This target is 5% of your weight. If you succeed in losing this, you will be eligible to continue taking Orlistat. Pharmacists can supply Orlistat for up to two years.

Each time Orlistat is supplied you will need to supply your pharmacist with your current weight. If your weight goes up in any three months, Orlistat will need to be stopped. If you lose enough weight for your BMI to fall below 28, Orlistat can no longer be supplied.

Some people do not succeed in losing weight with Orlistat, and these people should not be disheartened. They can have a break of 6 months and try again later or see a doctor or a weight loss clinic as alternatives. Losing weight, like many things that are hard to achieve, takes perseverance and resolve, so do not give up!
