Brent Pharmacy recommends Orlistat

Since 2010, Orlistat is the only obesity prescription drug in the UK that is recommended specifically for the management of obesity.

If you are obese, you must speak to your GP for advice about losing weight safely. Your GP will advise you about losing body weight by eating a healthy, balanced diet as well as regular physical activity.

They will also let you know about other useful weight management services, such as local weight loss groups provided by your local authority, the NHS, or commercial services you may have to pay for. There is also exercise available on prescription which is where you are referred to a local active health team for a few sessions under the supervision of a qualified trainer.

You may have underlying problems associated with obesity, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), high blood pressure, diabetes or sleep apnoea. If so, your GP may recommend further tests or specific treatment, and in some cases, they may refer you to a specialist.

When should Orlistat be used?

When combined with regular exercise and healthy diet plan, Orlistat weight loss pill can increase your chances of getting to a healthy weight in a safe and effective way, and aid treating obesity.

Orlistat will generally only be recommended if you have made a significant effort to lose weight through diet, exercise or changing your lifestyle, but are still gaining weight. You can only use Orlistat if a doctor or pharmacist thinks it's the right medicine for you.

Even then, Orlistat is only prescribed if you have either a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 28 or more, and other weight-related conditions such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes or are considered obese with a BMI of 30 or more.

Before prescribing Orlistat, your doctor will discuss the benefits and potential limitations with you, including any side effects. Follow your doctor's advice about how to take it, and the instructions that come with your medicine.

A dose of Orlistat should be taken 3 times a day, over 12 weeks, during which time you should aim to lose about 5% of your weight. However, the speed and quality of its effects depend on aspects of your lifestyle.

How does Orlistat work?

Orlistat works in a unique way by helping enzymes in your digestive system, called lipases, block about one-third of the fat in the food you eat from being digested. When taken with meals, Orlistat attaches to the lipases and blocks them from breaking down some of the fat you have eaten, so undigested fat is not absorbed into your body and is passed out with your stools. It does not work by reducing appetite.

Orlistat has proved in clinical trials to help you lose up to 50% more weight than with dieting alone.

While Orlistat does help reduce the amount of fat your body absorbs, it is only effective if you make complementary lifestyle changes. These include increased exercise, eating a balanced diet, reducing alcohol consumption and other behavioural changes including your personal commitment and motivation to losing weight.

Lifestyle improvements

Lifestyle modification is crucial to the success of maintaining a healthy weight; exercise is essential, moderating calorie intake and reducing fat intake in conjunction with eating a balanced diet. Reducing alcohol consumption is a must, and other behavioural changes are necessary for success. Keep in mind there are no short term solutions, dedication is key.

Self-monitoring of weight, keeping a check of your body mass index (BMI), food intake and increasing physical activity will all help avoid weight gain, as will personal goal setting, education via group meetings or virtual meetings, stress reduction, motivational interviewing, counselling and problem-solving strategies.

You will need to increase your capacity for self-control by changing habits and maintaining the new habits. All this will have many other benefits, not just weight loss, including reducing high blood pressure, blood sugar levels, risk of heart disease, improving you heart rate and making you generally feel much better.

Side effects

Side effects could include stomach discomfort or pain, and flatulence (wind) with an oily discharge. You may have a sudden need to open your bowels, and stools may be oily, liquid or fatty in texture. If these common side effects are more prevalent if you take Orlistat following a fatty meal.

Orlistat is not usually recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women. For full information on side effects, risk factors and correct use, see the patient information leaflet. If any side effects concern you, contact us. As with all medications, call your doctor, online doctor or healthcare professional to seek medical advice if you suffer allergic reactions.
